Spectators flock to the large, often multi-purpose built stadia across Australia, to attend the matches – the 2015/2016 edition saw the Big Bash League enter the top ten of world sporting events in regard average number of paying spectator per match – not bad for a tournament that was only created in 2011.

Given the traditionally good weather that accompanies an Australian summer, coupled with the fact the t20 Big Bash schedule is played during the school holidays, it is no surprise that Big Bash cricket has been such a success.

- How To Bet On The Big Bash League: Summary
1. Big Bash Schedule
The Big Bash schedule is played across the holiday months of December and January as eight Big Bash teams (or franchises) battle it out to see if they can become the latest Big Bash winners. The Big Bash fixture list is typically available months in advance to the start of the season.
The format and Big Bash schedule allows the best players in the world to make themselves available in a six or seven week window in which all 35 matches can be played. All matches in the Big Bash schedule are played on different days, with two matches sometimes played back-to-back at different venues on the same day.
By having all the matches in this designated period, domestic players can hone their t20 cricket skills alongside the world’s best t20 freelance cricketers without the distraction of having a four day first class match or a 50 over a side one day game getting in the way of their t20 cricket. This is a problem that England has with its current t20 Blast format, with matches spread across various days of the week across a large chunk of the season.
The group stage sees the eight Big Bash teams play each other once, with each side's eighth and final group match coming against a designated rival, meaning they play that rival twice. Each match of the Big Bash schedule is worth two points for a win, with the top four sides qualify for the semi-finals.
Big Bash Final
The two winners of the semi-finals qualify for the Big Bash Final, which is usually staged on a pre designated venue. This means that the Big Bash fixture list is composed of 35 matches, played across the season, with 32 group stage matches, 2 semi-finals and the final itself.
2. Big Bash Teams
The eight Big Bash teams have all been in place since the league's inaugural season. The two biggest cities in Australia – Melbourne and Sydney – have two sides attached to the city, with Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and Hobart having one side apiece.
Below is a list of the eight Big Bash teams with their historic results listed next to their name (most recent being 2015/2016 which is listed first). Each of the Big Bash League teams home ground is also mentioned:
|Sydney Thunder||Sydney Showground||8th||8th||8th||7th||1st|
|Hobart Hurricanes||Blundstone Arena||SF||6th||2nd||5th||7th|
|Adelaide Strikers||Adelaide Oval||6th||5th||7th||SF||SF|
|Melbourne Renegades||Etihad Stadium||7th||SF||6th||6th||5th|
3. Big Bash History
Big Bash scores and stats have progressed over the five years of the tournament played out to date. Michael Klinger has scored the most runs in the event’s history with 1274 runs accumulated in his 41 matches played for the Adelaide Strikers and Perth Scorchers, whilst Australian opening batsman Aaron Finch is just behind on 1207 runs from 9 matches less.
Ex-England biffer Luke Wright is one of two players to have scored two centuries in the first five Big Bash Leagues, the other being Australian Usman Khwaja. Brisbane Heat's Chris Lynn has hit the most sixes – 68 in just 38 matches to be precise!
Wicket takers are crucial to t20 success – Ben Laughlin is 14 ahead of anyone else with 60 wickets over the course of the first five BBL cricket stagings. Brad Hogg and Jason Behrenndoff of the Scorchers are second and third on the all-time wicket takers list, a reflection of the franchise’s success' as double Big Bash winners.
Big Bash Results
While the league may still be in its infancy, there have been many great moments in the history of the Big Bash League. There have been plenty of surprises and shock Big Bash results in recent seasons. The unpredictable natures of t20 cricket lends itself to some enthralling contests, with most Big Bash League results not being decided until the last few overs.
Perth Scorchers are not only the only side to have won multiple BBL cricket titles to date, but they are also easily the most consistent, qualifying for the final on 4/5 occasions and making at least the knock-out stage on each occasion of the first five stagings of the event.
Sydney Sixers have been a lot more successful than their city rivals, the Sydney Thunder. Whilst both sides have one BBL title to their names to date, the Sixers have been runners up to the Scorchers in 2014/2015, whilst also qualifying for the semi-final the year before. The Thunder meanwhile have struggled since the inaugural event that they won, finishing last in 3 of the other 4 stagings and second last in the other.
Queensland's Brisbane franchise, the Heat, are the fourth team with the name of the trophy during the first five BBL cricket tournaments. Strangely though they have yet to qualify for the semi-final stage during the other four stagings.
Both Melbourne franchises, the Renegades and the Stars, have perhaps surprisingly failed yet to register a win between team. Melbourne is a hotbed of sport and is an extremely proud Australian city. The fashionable Stars play out of the biggest stadium in Australian, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and have qualified through the group stage on each of the five stagings to date, yet have only made one final.
Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes have similar histories to date, both having qualified through the group stage on two occasions. Hobart have gone one better having registered one runners up spot back in 2013/2014, losing out to Perth Scorchers who were claiming their first of two BBL titles at the time.
|2011-2012||Sydney Sixers||Perth Scorchers|
|2012-2013||Brisbane Heat||Perth Scorchers|
|2013-2014||Perth Scorchers||Hobart Hurricanes|
|2014-2015||Perth Scorchers||Sydney Sixers|
|2015-2016||Sydney Thunder||Melbourne Stars|
4. Big Bash League Odds Explained
Big Bash Match Odds
The most popular market in Big Bash League betting is of course the match outcome. Two sides head-to-head, the winner takes all. You can either place a bet pre-match with any traditional bookmaker or wait for a potentially bigger price in play.
Big Bash In Play Over Under Runs Scored
As BBL cricket is mainly all about the runs, you can bet on a number of markets in regards a team’s batting performance. One such popular market is a rolling over/under runs line in which a bookmaker will set a certain number of likely runs a team will score in their 20 overs. If they lose a wicket or play out a few dot balls, that line is likely to decrease. If a batsman hits a boundary then naturally that line will increase. The same also applies for individual batsman runs lines.
Over Under Total Boundaries
Big Bash League is also about boundaries – cricket bookies online will often offer an over/under line of the number of fours or sixes a side will hit during their 20 over innings. Some sides are more adept at hitting sixes than others, whereas other sides have weaker bowling attacks in which batting line ups have a better chance to attack successfully.
Highest 6 Over Score
Highest 6 overs score (powerplay) is another market that often can give pre-match value. Some sides have opening batsmen that always look to hit boundaries no matter what the pitch or game scenario is, whereas another team’s openers might look to be slightly more circumspect in say a lower run chase. Sides that contain the likes of Aaron Finch or Chris Gayle will always go hard no matter what.
Big Bash Man Of The Match Odds
Man of the match awards are handed out to players that naturally make a telling difference to the outcome of any given match. For value, concentrate on looking for players that might have several quieter matches, before suddenly popping up from nowhere to bowl a match winning spell on a suitable wicket or a middle order batsman that can blast his side to victory from seemingly nowhere with a quick-fire cameo. All-rounders such as Dwayne Bravo or Andre Russell are always good options here as they can win a match with either bat or ball.
5. How To Bet On The Big Bash And Win
Research Likely Conditions & Ground History
Even in the crash, bang, wallop world of t20 cricket, conditions so often dictate what sort of match we are likely to witness. Take time to research the idiosyncrasies that each BBL venue has.
What is the average score historically and recently on any given playing surface? Is the pitch likely to be a tired, slow drop in pitch at one of the multi-purpose stadia used by say the Sydney Thunder or the Melbourne Renegades.
Has the Adelaide Oval surface been showing signs of turn for the spin bowlers like it traditionally so often offers?
Scores at the MCG are likely to be lower than say the Blundstone Arena given the larger playing surface and thus bigger boundaries.
Batting Positions Are Key
In t20 cricket a side’s innings comprises of just 120 balls. This is not a lot of time for your top batsman pick to score enough runs if he isn't batting for a large proportion of the innings. We would suggest thinking long and hard before putting your dollar down on a batsman that tends to bat outside the top three in his side’s batting order – unless of course his team mates that open the batting are hopelessly out of form – you want your man at the crease for as long as possible, and ideally playing some of his big shots during the powerplay, where boundaries are readily on offer due to fielding restrictions.
Bowlers Take Wickets At The Death
Even in t20 cricket such as the Big Bash League, there is still a time when a batting side will look to knock it around – this usually comes between overs 6 and 15 – as the template for many Big Bash teams will be to go hard at the start and death of an innings, with a period of consolidation in those middle overs.
With wickets in hand at the death, a batting side can take plenty of chances to try and hit boundaries and increase the run rate, safe in the knowledge that they have wickets in hand. This means bowlers can take plenty of wickets in clusters at the end of an innings – concentrate on who is likely to bowl these death overs when placing your top team bowler bets.
In Play Value
Given the fast paced nature of t20 cricket, in play odds can vary massively from over-to-over depending on what drama unfolds before our eyes. A bowling side can seemingly be in control, pushing up the chasing sides required run rate with every ball that isn't a boundary. Then suddenly a middle order big hitter such as Travis Head or David Hussey hits two or three sixes in a row, the required rate drops from a seemingly improbable 13 per over to a more than manageable 7.5 an over, and the market has flipped. The batting side has gone from being a 4.00 outsider to a 1.33 favourite in the space of an over! The trick is to know when a flip such as this example is likely to occur and striking.
The nature of the t20 beast sees this situation occur with regularity, sometimes several times within the same innings – especially during extreme high or low scoring Big Bash cricket matches.
6. Betting On The Big Bash League Online
William Hill offer the widest range of markets for betting on Big Bash cricket online in our opinion. They cover all the obvious leading markets that we mentioned above, plus offer some side markets that we like such as individual player performance points over/under markets. This is where a player is scored 1pt a run, 10pts a catch, 20pts a wicket or 25pts a stumping throughout the duration of a match.
BetVictor seem to specialise in offering batsman match up bets; great if you fancy that a certain batsman is in form and is likely to outscore a team mate or an opponent during a certain match.
Skybet also have a growing list of pre-match cricket markets on offer. Although not as extensive as the above two, they offer good value for money, often offering the biggest odds for many outright winning market.
It's important to do your research before selecting a bookmaker for Big Bash League betting. It's also important to consider their welcome bonus when signing up. Some bookmakers offer very generous sign up bonuses that are well worth taking advantage. But remember to read the welcome terms and conditions as what may appear an attractive offer at first glance, may not be so attractive when you consider the conditions that must be met in order to withdraw your bonus as cash.

7. Big Bash League Free Bets
Paddy Power have previously offered a fine free bet promotional offer in which they refund any losing match winner bet if there is a six hit in the last over of the match. Paddy also has historically offered money back as a free bet if your side scores over 175 in a domestic t20 match and loses, so again, check out their website nearer the start of the next BBL to see if they are offering something similar.
William Hill went one better during a previous staging of the BBL and actually offered money back as a free bet if your side scored 150 and still lost for bets placed pre-match.
Titanbet are starting to gain respect in the industry and during the 2015/2016 BBL they were offering money back on any top batsman bet if your selection had a shocker and got out for a duck!
You think that offer was good? Ladbrokes offered money back as a free bet if your top batsman pick got out for less than ten runs – a fine offer indeed, especially if backing a middle order batsman that might not get much time at the crease if one or more of his team mates in the top order batted for a long period of time.
