Spurs and Watford set to stumble at FA Cup 4th round hurdle

-

This weekend looks set to bring FA Cup heartbreak for Tottenham Hotspur, with the side having crashed out of the fourth round the joint-most number of times than any other remaining Premier League team in the competition, along with Watford. Both the Lilywhites and the Hornets each possess a woeful FA Cup fourth round record of late, with both sides having been eliminated from the FA Cup at this stage five times since the 2007/2008 season.

Tottenham 4th Round Flop-Spurs

The difference in quality between Spurs and Watford is such that Mauricio Pochettino’s men will be much more disappointed with their competition record, as the north Londoners should be regarding the FA Cup as an attainable piece of silverware.

Despite the obvious quality in their side, research suggests that Tottenham have suffered a 50% failure rate over the last decade at this point in the tournament.

At the other end of the fourth-round failure spectrum, second-in-the-league Manchester United have only gone out once in the last ten years, when they fell victim to fierce rivals Liverpool, back in 2012.

The Reds, incidentally, sit just behind Spurs and Watford in joint second position for fourth round exits, along with Southampton, Newcastle and Brighton and Hove Albion who have all crashed out four times.

With Spurs having been humbled by the likes of Crystal Palace, Leeds and Leicester at this point in recent years, they would do well not to underestimate their pending fourth round foe, even if it is Welsh minnow Newport County – everyone loves an underdog, after all.

Spurs, as well as joint-top fourth round stumblers Watford, are already on the backfoot with away draws and should be prepared for heartbreak this weekend.
