League Cup just petty cash for Manchester City

-

A win for Manchester City this weekend would give them their third League Cup in five years, but not much more than that, with the paltry cash prize barely covering the players’ wages for seven hours. City are this year’s fifth-richest football club and their squad is awash with household names, so it’s no surprise that the League Cup’s £100,000 prize scarcely covers a working day’s worth of the players’ wages.

Pocket-change prize for Pep’s City

While a piece of silverware is always priceless, the League Cup is rendered virtually useless to City in financial terms, carrying with it a measly cash prize that scarcely pays star striker Sergio Aguero for three days.

To put it in further perspective, if Pep’s team emerges victorious against Arsenal in the final, the winnings will likely just about amount to what the players will be paid for their services at Wembley that day.

The more prestigious FA Cup brings with it a £1.8 million pay packet, which would settle the squad’s wages for a less-measly 5.1 days or, in other terms, would pay Kevin De Bruyne for 11 weeks before drying up.

However, as they are no longer in contention for the FA Cup’s bigger payday after their recent felling by League One underdogs Wigan Athletic, the Citizens’ shot at domestic cup redemption comes this weekend, with a cash prize that’s 18 x smaller.

Pep’s men have one other chance to bag a tournament trophy in the form of the Champions League – and Europe’s most elite competition pays out a considerably more lucrative £15 million, which would cover the side’s wage bill for a much handier 43 days.

As one might expect, Manchester City have one of the heftiest player wage bills around, with the Carabao Cup prize money simply a drop in the ocean.

So this weekend, Guardiola will be hoping his men will be spurred on by the prospect of adding another trophy to the cabinet, because the pocket-change prize money that accompanies it is little motivation.
